Three ordered procedures with timings in seconds: the 4-7-8 pattern, box breathing, and resonance breathing at 6 breaths per minute.
The 4-7-8 breathing pattern is a widely taught relaxation exercise: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, exhale for 8 seconds. One cycle therefore takes 19 seconds, and four cycles take just over a minute — a session short enough to fit into any gap in a day.
Box breathing uses four equal phases. Inhale, hold, exhale, and hold again, each with the same count in seconds — for example 4-4-4-4, a 16-second cycle. It is useful when a long exhale feels forced or when the 7-second hold of the 4-7-8 pattern is uncomfortable.

Resonance breathing is slow breathing at about 6 breaths per minute, which means one full cycle lasts 10 seconds. This rate is associated with higher heart-rate variability, a marker of relaxation. A practical way to hold the rhythm is 5 seconds in, 5 seconds out, sustained for several minutes.
All three procedures share a structure: fixed counts, a repeatable cycle, and a session measured in seconds rather than minutes. Start with whichever pattern has counts you can hold comfortably, then keep the exhale as the longest phase where the pattern allows it.
If any hold causes discomfort, shorten the whole pattern proportionally while keeping the relative proportions. The ratio between phases carries the effect; the absolute numbers are adjustable.
